Why your honeymoon might need a mountain

The case for adding stone villages, a gorge and a fireplace to an island trip.

Zagori

20 August 2026

Two weeks of beaches sounds perfect until about day nine. That is often when we suggest the mainland. Not Athens again, but the mountains of Epirus, where the villages of Zagori are built entirely of grey stone and arched bridges cross the rivers.

A typical couple’s three nights: walk part of the Vikos Gorge, swim in the very cold Voidomatis river, eat hand-made pies in a village square, and spend an evening doing nothing much by a fire. Then fly home from Ioannina via Athens, or drive on to Meteora.

It works best in late spring or early autumn, when the walking weather is good and the colours are at their best. See our Zagori & Epirus guide.
